Last year, online retailers accounted for almost half the cash growth in retail spending, with sales increasing 15 times faster than the retail average. Though online's share of retail is still small, its meteoric growth is sending shock waves throughout the wider retail sector as shoppers of all ages transfer their purchases online.

Next's trading update for Christmas 2005 is one of the first significant indicators of how British retail fared over Christmas. The fashion retailer's modest turnaround in like-for-like sales has seen Next shares rise to a 12-month high. Yet while the figures look promising, they do not reflect the bigger picture and should not be treated as a reliable barometer for the whole market.

MFI has endured a torrid year and its latest disappointing results prove that the retailer will need to take drastic measures to turn the business around. It is likely that the retail arm could be sold to one of three private equity firms that are currently circling the beleaguered retailer.

MFI's retail division has been one of the most high profile casualties of the furniture sector having suffered from a relentless slide in sales and persistently weak margins. Merchant Equity Partners should give the retail chain a fresh start with new management, taking an ax to its store portfolio and reduce the company's high cost base, but this will be no easy task.

Venture capitalist group Merchant Equity Partners has agreed to buy MFI's retail operations, intending to turn round the ailing furniture retailer and sell it on for up to GBP500 million in five years. Although an ambitious target, the heavyweight team assembled by MFI means it may just be able to pull it off.

Following deteriorating performance, Merchant Equity Partners is reviewing strategic options for furniture retailer MFI and it is thought that merger talks have been held with several parties. Such consolidation is testament to the current challenging trading environment, and as conditions are unlikely to improve in the near term, this is unlikely to be the only merger in the next 12 months.

MFI is reportedly planning a move upmarket with the launch of a new kitchen chain - understood to be named Dreamworks - which will sell kitchens in the GBP8,000 to GBP12,000 range. While the company needs to make such a change to remain competitive, MFI will have to work hard to secure a place in the already crowded premium segment.

MFI has negotiated the GBP92 million sale of its French business Hygena Cuisines to Nobia in a deal that could allow it to stave off an emergency cash call on investors. However the real test for the retailer now lies in how it chooses to restructure itself. With much of the competition coming from the lower end of the market, MFI needs to focus on extending its upmarket appeal.

Two separate bids have been tabled for the retail arm of MFI Furniture, but analysts have predicted that MFI will have to pay up to GBP270 million to persuade a buyer to take on its 200 stores. Nevertheless the temptation to rid itself of a problematic operation may prove hard for MFI to resist.

MFI is to cut 1,470 jobs and close at least eleven stores as part of a restructuring plan aimed at reversing its recent poor performance. The furniture retailer has failed to compete with rivals at both ends of the market, and a reinvention now may be a case of too little, too late.
