German fuel: 'nein' to foreign retail deals

RWE and E.ON want to focus on their core utility businesses, while Shell and BP want to shore up their position in the consolidating German fuel retail market. However, the cartel office will block both deals unless the companies make major concessions. These are likely to be so major that they destroy the logic for the deals, leaving everyone back at square one.

German petrol: brakes off for consolidation

The regulator will make the companies dispose of some of their service station sites, and will also force BP to cut its stake in the Bayernoil refinery. The deal is still likely to be worthwhile for the oil majors. It could also be good news for OMV and Lukoil, who are the frontrunners to buy the refining assets and further their positions in Germany.

Yukos: Russia set to invade Europe

While there are many bidders for BP's surplus German oil businesses, Yukos is one of the frontrunners to purchase the 650 service stations and 45% share in a refinery. Yukos has earmarked $2 billion towards improving its position in western European refining and retailing. Alongside fellow Russian firm Lukoil, Yukos is definitely a company to watch.

German fuel: the fight is on, if the price is right

The fight is definitely on in German fuel retailing. Three Russian companies plus Austria's OMV aim to buy BP's sites, while TotalFinaElf is looking at acquiring sites from Shell/DEA. While the winner will gain a much-needed foothold in the market, they are likely to get the least profitable service stations. The winning bidder will be left with further challenges ahead.<BR />

BP: still no suitors for German sites

While many companies have window shopped in Germany, few are reaching for their check books to buy BP's 800 sites and 45% stake in the Bayernoil refinery. Finding a buyer is imperative for BP to meet antitrust rulings should the company fail to find an acquisitor, it may have to consider repackaging the assets or, in the worst-case scenario, closing sites.
