The deal is important, since 10-15% of Gaucher disease patients live in Israel. While it goes against OGS' intended strategy of marketing Vevesca alone, the deviation will be beneficial in the long run. Israel will not be as strong a market for OGS' later compounds, and a large licensing payment at this stage will help it establish salesforces in the key pharma markets.

The price of Brent crude futures has risen by $7 per barrel on the IPE in London since January, bringing calls for Opec to increase its output and prevent further rises. Those calls have been dismissed as premature, but the oil exporters' determination to control production may yet be tested in the coming months.

Saudi Arabia has been a hard market for western oil majors to penetrate, making this latest opportunity for greater involvement highly attractive. The pace of change is certain to be slow, and delays inevitable. Even so, this is not likely to deter the oil companies. Many are likely to try and take advantage of this opportunity to build their Saudi presence.

Developments at this month's World Summit in South Africa have left the US as the victor. No global targets or timetables were set for renewable energy; the EU and developing countries have been left to set their own. The only concrete targets the US has agreed are for sanitation. Unsurprisingly, environmentalists have been left smarting.

While the WTO has not yet made a breakthrough on the issue of patent-free HIV drugs for developing economies, something must be done to alleviate the human and economic cost of the HIV epidemic. Western pharma companies will inevitably lose out - the only question is how well their profit maintenance strategies can cushion the blow.

Selling formula baby milk to mothers in developing nations to replace breast milk has long been a touchy issue. In the wake of large-scale outflows from money market funds late last year, Datamonitor argued that investors' fears around this fund class were unjustified, and predicted significant movements of cash back into the category. The latest data shows that we were right: money market funds are back in fashion, although they will have to fight for investors' attention during 2009.

Trade ministers have agreed that the Doha round of trade negotiations is the best step global leaders can take to avoid a protectionist backlash to the current economic crisis. Although the market is expected to contract in 2009 and 2010 regardless of any political intervention, resolving the Doha round will at least help towards reducing the impact of the downturn.

The long list of banks raising new money in the current crisis has been joined by HSBC, with the announcement of a GBP12.5 billion cash call. What singles the company's money-raising exercise out from the others is less the scale of the operation than the fact that it is acquiring cash in the traditional way, pointing not just to the bank's strength, but to fledgling faith in the banking industry.
