BETTA and energy retail in Scotland's I&C market

Before the UK's latest electricity trading system BETTA was introduced, the Scottish wholesale power market was controlled by SSE and ScottishPower but prices were set by the regulator Ofgem. BETTA sweeps this away, and Datamonitor's Daniel Legg argues that a single UK traded wholesale power market will lead to profound changes in Scotland's retail I&C electricity sector...

BP: going wholesale not retail

BP [BP.L] seemingly considers UK I&C retail supply to add little value to its business when compared against wholesale supply, and the exit of BP from the I&C gas supply market leaves massive gas volumes available to other suppliers. In share terms these volumes are enticing, but in margin terms, companies such as Total, GDF and Shell will aim not to fill the vacuum on BP's old contract terms.

Centrica has been at the forefront of calls for the creation of a level playing field for all suppliers in Europe. This ideal is currently hindered by severe obstacles, and negative advertising in the UK rightly does not top the list of these. Yet it should be remembered that such advertising nevertheless constitutes a further impediment to a fair market for new entrants.

Centrica: dipping its toe into German waters

Following the German regulator's move to break up some of the long-term energy supply contracts between incumbents and local suppliers, Centrica has decided to expand their presence in Germany. Changes afoot in Russian electricity and gas markets

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian economy slumped and the demand for electricity and gas plummeted. E.ON: forging ahead in emissions trading

Trading emissions quotas in CO2 between energy companies is a practice that has emerged following the EU's moves to limit emissions of carbon dioxide to meet the terms of the Kyoto agreement on climate change. The development of a traded market in these credits means power generators such as E.ON will have to make a strategic choice over their permit positions.
