In 2005, there were 3.7 billion transactions on payment cards in Germany, representing an improvement over the 2004 figure of 3.2 billion and making Germany the third largest market in Europe in terms of transactions on payment cards. The vast majority (90.6%) of these payment card transactions in 2005 took place on debit cards, followed by charge/deferred debit cards with 8.8% and credit cards with just 0.6%.
