The group operates in the UK, US and internationally through its two principal subsidiaries, the Royal Bank and NatWest. In the US, the group operates through its subsidiary Citizens. It is headquartered in Edinburgh, UK and employs about 199,500 people.
The group recorded revenues of £25,868 million ($37,454.3 million) during the financial year ended December 2008, a decrease of 14.8% over 2007. The group recorded an operating loss of £40,667 million ($58,881.7 million) during the financial year ended December 2008, as compared to an operating profit of £9,832 million ($14,235.8 million) in 2007. The group recorded net loss of £34,373 million ($49,768.7 million) during the financial year ended December 2008, as compared to net profit of £7,712 million ($11,166.2 million) in 2007.
